Dr. William Plum earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Maryland in College Park, Maryland. During the period between college and medical school, he gained valuable experience at the National Institutes of Health while concurrently volunteering as a firefighter and emergency medical technician.He proceeded to obtain his medical degree from Johns Hopkins University, where he dedicated his time to conducting clinical research at the renowned Wilmer Eye Institute. Dr. Plum then completed his medical internship at Sinai Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland. He then relocated to New York City to pursue his residency in Ophthalmology at Columbia University Medical Center. During his residency, he served as Chief Resident, exemplifying his leadership and dedication to the field.Driven by a desire for continuous learning, Dr. Plum remained at Columbia for a fellowship in Glaucoma and Anterior Segment Surgery. This invaluable experience provided him with the opportunity to learn from esteemed leaders in the field.Dr. Plum's diverse educational background and extensive training have undoubtedly equipped him with a wealth of knowledge and skills to excel in his chosen specialty.Why Ophthalmology?"Becoming an ophthalmologist allows me to fulfill my passion for providing exceptional eye care to those in need. It is disheartening to witness how vulnerable patient populations often lack access to adequate vision care. Hence, being able to assist these patients with such a vital aspect of their lives and how they engage with the world is truly an honor.The role of vision in our daily lives cannot be overstated, and as an ophthalmologist, I recognize the profound impact I can make on my patients' quality of life.
