Dr. Manuel D Cerqueira, MD

Manuel Cerqueira, MD, is Chairman of Nuclear Medicine in the Imaging Institute and a Staff Cardiologist in the Sydell and Arnold Miller Family Heart & Vascular Institute. He serves as a consultant to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, as a member and Chairman of the Advisory Committee on Medical Use of Isotopes. He is a member of the Diagnostic Imaging Panel of the Medicare Coverage Advisory Committee and has represented the American College of Cardiology on the AMA/CMS RUC. He is certified in internal medicine, nuclear medicine, cardiovascular disease and nuclear cardiology. Dr. Cerqueira has a special clinical and research interest in using cardiovascular imaging methods to identify patients with coronary artery disease and those at high risk for having heart attacks or dying from a cardiac cause. A native of Portugal, Dr. Cerqueira did his undergraduate work at Franklin & Marshall College in Lancaster, Pa., and received his medical degree from New York University School of Medicine. He did an internship and residency in internal medicine at Bellevue Medical Center in New York City, where he became Chief Resident in internal medicine. He continued his clinical training with a fellowship in cardiology from Yale-New Haven Hospital in Connecticut, and continued on at the hospital, becoming Chief Resident in Nuclear Medicine. Prior to his appointment to the Cleveland Clinic in 2004, Dr. Cerqueira was Chief of Cardiology at Georgetown University Medical Center in Washington, D.C. He also served as a consultant in nuclear cardiology to the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Md. During his tenure at Georgetown University Medical Center, Dr. Cerqueira was also Director of Nuclear Cardiology, the Exercise Stress Testing Laboratory and Cardiac Rehabilitation. Dr. Cerqueira has held several academic appointments. He was Professor in the Departments of Medicine and Radiology at Georgetown University and Professor in the Department of Radiology and Medicine at University of Washington School of Medicine in Seattle. He was also Chief of Nuclear Medicine at the Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center. For his clinical research efforts, he has received the Bertram M. Gesner Memorial Award for Research in Immunology and the Evelyn Gayner Memorial Award from the Society for the Study of Blood. His funded research efforts have focused on measuring the effects of various treatments for acute myocardial infarction, the development of new perfusion and thrombus imaging agents and protocols and the safety of pharmacologic stress testing. Dr. Cerqueira received the Distinguished Service Award and the Leadership Award from the American Society of Nuclear Cardiology in 2000, when he also received a "lifetime" listing in Whos Who in America. He has also been listed in Best Doctors in America since 1998. Currently, Dr. Cerqueira is a grant reviewer for the National Institutes of Health, Division of Grants. He has continued to serve in many posts including reviewer, abstract grader and editorial board member for many leading publications such as the American Journal of Cardiology, the American Journal of Roentgenology, and the Journal of the American College of Cardiology, among others. He is on the editorial boards of the European Journal of Nuclear Medicine and the Journal of Nuclear Cardiology. He is widely published in leading peer-reviewed publications and has authored or co-authored more than 140 articles, 26 book chapters and 75 abstracts on issues related to clinical and research findings. Dr. Cerqueira is a Founding Member of the American Society of Nuclear Cardiology. He is a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology (FACC), and a Fellow of two councils of the American Heart Association: the Council on Cardiovascular Radiology and the Council on Clinical Cardiology. He is a member of the American Society of Nuclear Cardiology and Society of Nuclear Medicine.
