Brief Intro

Negotiating the maze of orthopaedic treatments available in 21st century medicine can be bewildering. As a physician, my efforts are as much to educate my patients as they are to treat them; I take a flexible and highly personal approach with every patient. The faith patients ultimately place in their physician is not lost on me or other providers in my group. Dr. Bernstein attended the School of Engineering and Applied Science at the University of Pennsylvania majoring in Bioengineering. He was elected to the Tau Beta Pi National Engineering Honors Society. Orthopaedic related research during his college years included theoretical work on ACL matrix scaffolding and anthropomorphic design. Dr. Bernstein graduated Georgetown University Medical School with honors and was elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha honors society. Following medical school, he completed his general surgery internship at New York University Medical Center and Bellevue Hospital Center. During residency at the New York University/Hospital for Joint Diseases-Orthopaedic Institute, he participated in extensive orthopaedic research. Dr. Bernstein’s research culminated with authoring publications in the following peer-reviewed orthopaedic journals: The Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery, Arthroscopy, The Journal of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery, The American Journal of Orthopedics, Orthopedics, and the Bulletin of the Hospital for Joint Diseases. In his final year of residency, Dr. Bernstein was awarded a Senior Resident Research Award from the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at NYU/HJD. Following his residency, Dr. Bernstein completed a Sports Medicine Fellowship at Lenox Hill Hospital in Manhattan. This training was dedicated to sports medicine and athletic trauma. Dr. Bernstein had the privilege to train with the physicians and medical staff for the New York Jets, New York Islanders, Hofstra University, Hunter College and the United States Open Tennis Tournament. In addition to the first-hand experience with professional and collegiate teams and athletes, he attended the National Football League Scouting Combine in Indianapolis, Indiana. Dr. Bernstein joined Garden State Orthopaedics as an attending physician in 2003. He is board certified in orthopaedic surgery and was amongst the first group of orthopaedic surgeons in the nation to obtain a Subspecialty Certificate in Orthopaedic Sports Medicine through the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery. Dr. Bernstein has a specialty interest in sports medicine and arthroscopic surgery–including ACL reconstruction, arthroscopic shoulder instability/rotator cuff repair, and elbow arthroscopy. He has privileges at the Valley Hospital in Ridgewood, New Jersey and the NYU/Hospital for Joint Diseases in Manhattan. Dr. Bernstein has been appointed as a Clinical Assistant Professor in Orthopaedic Surgery at the New York University School of Medicine. Currently, Dr. Bernstein is proud to be the team physician for the Indian Hills High School in Oakland, New Jersey and he serves as an orthopaedic consult for Felician College and Bloomfield College. He remains an avid runner recently completing the New York City Marathon. Dr. Bernstein has been honored with a Patient’s Choice Award in 2008 and has been recognized in 2009 by the Consumers’ Research Council of America as one of America’s Top Orthopedists.
