Dr. Samuel Snyder was born and raised in Long Island, New York. He graduated with high honors from C.W. Post College of Long Island University and achieved a Bachelor of Science degree in both Chemistry and Biology. From childhood, Dr. Snyder knew that he wanted to become a surgeon so; of course, in college he was “pre-medâ€. While attending college he was president of the Chemical Society, founder and president of the Coalition of Science Societies, a senator in the student government, and Editor in Chief of the college literary magazine. During his collegiate summers he lead bicycle and backpack tours throughout North America.
After graduating college Dr. Snyder attended Cornell University Medical College in New York City to become a surgeon. He received the Dean's Research Prize for his work on the blood supply to the meniscal cartilage of the knee. In his senior year he was awarded an International Scholarship to study orthopaedic surgery at Oxford University. At his graduation he was awarded the Charles Horn Prize for Outstanding Leadership and Service to the Medical Community. Thereafter, Dr. Snyder completed a one-year internship in General Surgery at the New York's St. Luke's-Roosevelt Hospital.
Dr. Snyder completed a four-year orthopaedic residency at the prestigious Hospital for Special Surgery in Manhattan. U.S. News and World Report has rated the Hospital for Special Surgery as the finest orthopaedic hospital in the United States. He then pursued a one-year fellowship in fracture management at the New York Hospital. Dr. Snyder completed his surgical training with a second fellowship in hand and microsurgery in Tokyo, Japan. In addition to learning hand surgery Dr. Snyder also became fluent in Japanese.
Dr. Snyder entered clinical practice in 1990. He initially worked for 12 years at the Westwood Orthopaedic Group in Westwood, New Jersey. In 2002 he was recruited by Dr. Robert Schultz to join Garden State Orthopaedic Associates. Dr. Snyder is a skillful orthopaedic surgeon experienced in every aspect of orthopaedic surgery, able to treat virtually all orthopaedic abnormalities. He has a particularly strong interest in upper extremity and shoulder surgery and specifically the treatment of the rotator cuff. Dr. Snyder is a Diplomate of the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgeons and a Fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. He maintains surgical privileges at The Valley Hospital in Ridgewood, New Jersey.
In addition to orthopaedic surgery one of his other achievements is being an accomplished artist. During High school and college he worked as a graphic artist in his father's studio. In medical school he supported himself performing medical illustrations. Dr. Snyder has practiced scrimshaw since he was 13 years old and has many commissioned pieces in private collections. He has had his scrimshaw auctioned at Sotheby's in Manhattan. Dr. Snyder holds three patents for medical inventions. In conjunction with his wife, they perform Japanese – English medical translations.
