For over a decade, Dr. Walter Halloran has contributed his expertise to Cardiothoracic Surgery of Northern Indiana.
After graduating magna cum laude with a degree in chemistry from St. John's University in Collegesville, Minnesota, Dr. Halloran proceeded to earn his medical degree from the University of Minnesota Medical School in Minneapolis, Minnesota. His medical training continued at the University of Rochester and Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester, New York. He completed categorical residencies in General Surgery and in Cardiac and Thoracic Surgery. He was a Chief Resident and instructor in surgery from 1987 to 1989 and a Cardiothoracic Chief and instructor in surgery from 1989 to 1991.
As a Lieutenant Colonel in the United States Army Reserve, Dr. Halloran has served at the 8063 Evaq Hospital in Webster, New York; Fitzsimmons Army Medical Center in Denver, Colorado; Dwight D. Eisenhower Medical Center in Augusta, Georgia; and the Madigan Army Medical Center in Fort Lewis, Washington. He remains on the active medical staff at Madigan Army Medical Center and Dwight D. Eisenhower Medical Center.
Dr. Halloran holds Board Certification with the National Board of Medical Examiners, the American Board of Surgery, and the American Board of Thoracic Surgery. He is licensed in the States of Indiana and New York and carries certification from the Drug Enforcement Agency. He is a member of the Society of Thoracic Surgeons, a fellow of the American College of Surgeons, a member of the American College of Cardiology, the American Association of Thoracic Surgeons, the American College of Chest Physicians, and the American Medical Association.
Dr. Halloran has authored several scientific papers and he has contributed to several chapters in surgical texts.
Active in the Michiana community, Dr. Halloran has chaired the education and fundraising efforts for the HeartReach Michiana. He has been active in the Elkhart Community High School career educational programs, and has been a Board Member of the South Bend Symphony Orchestra. He and his wife are also members of the Alex Coquillard Society of the United Way of St. Joseph County. He also remains active in the University of Minnesota and St. John's University Alumni Associations.
