Current Responsibilities
Stanton N. Smullens, M.D. has been the chief medical officer for the Jefferson Health System since June 1999. He is the chief quality officer of the system and responsible for coordinating and monitoring a consistent high quality clinical agenda across the Jefferson Health System. He is chairman of the Jefferson Health System Quality Council and represents the medical leadership at the senior staff. He is vice chairman of the Pennsylvania Patient Safety Authority and serves on the Board of Advisors of the HealthCare Institute of the Widener School of Law.
Prior Experience
Dr. Smullens was the CEO of JeffCare, the PHO at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, from it founding in 1996 until 2005. He was president and medical director of the Jefferson Health Network, the umbrella managed care organization of the Jefferson Health System, from 1997 until 1999. He is board certified in General, Thoracic, and General Vascular Surgery. He stopped his active practice in vascular and general thoracic surgery at Jefferson in 1997 when he assumed his role in the Jefferson Health System.
Education, Awards and Professional Affiliations
Dr. Smullens received his undergraduate education at Harvard College and earned his medical degree from Jefferson Medical College where he was a member of AOA. He completed his surgical training at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital. He spent two years on active duty as a captain in the U.S. Army Medical Corps. He is a clinical professor of surgery at Jefferson Medical College and a member of many professional organizations including the American College of Surgeons and the American College of Physician Executives. Among his honors are the Presidency of the Jefferson Alumni Association and receiving the Leon A. Peris Memorial Award. His portrait is to be presented to Jefferson Medical School in the Fall of 2010.
