Dr. Merrick chose cardiology because â€~’it is an exciting and very dynamic field. I enjoy helping patients to regain a sense of control by understanding how to be active participants in the management of their health.’’ Dr. Merrick received his medical degree from the University of Kentucky. He also holds a Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry from Eastern Kentucky University and a Master’s Degree in Chemistry from the University of Kentucky. Dr. Merrick completed his residency in Internal Medicine at East Tennessee State University’s James H. Quillen College of Medicine where he has also served as Associate Professor of Medicine. Dr. Merrick is board certified in Internal Medicine and is a Fellow of the American College of Physicians. In his leisure time, Dr. Merrick enjoys gardening, skiing, scuba diving, bowhunting, camping, fishing, astronomy and learning. He is married to Marla Jane Scherrer Merrick and they have four children, Nathan, Jake, Leah and Paul.
