Dr. Pender received his undergraduate degree with honors at Harvard College in 1972, and graduated from medical school at the University of Michigan in 1976. He attended Wills Eye Hospital in Philadelphia for his specialty training in Ophthalmology. He is an American Board Certified Ophthalmologist.
Dr. Pender has had a strong interest in refractive surgery, having performed radial keratotomy in 1981 and Excimer laser vision correction since 1991 as Principal Investigator for VISX clinical studies in Manchester, NH. He has extensive experience in LASIK. Dr. Pender founded New Hampshire's first ambulatory surgical center in 1984 and he serves as its Medical Director (NovaMed-Bedford) .
He is the first New England eye surgeon to perform LASIK with an eye tracking laser. He has presented numerous papers to both United States ophthalmologists and to international audiences, and has published a book chapter on "Selecting the Right Surgical Procedure" in The Excimer Manual. Dr. Pender is a past President of the New England Ophthalmological Society, and has served as President of the New Hampshire Society of Eye Physicians and Surgeons. He resides in Bedford, New Hampshire, is married and has two children. He enjoys golf, tennis and hiking.
