Dr. Lowen graduated cum laude at the University of Maryland with a B.S. in biochemistry in 1988. He obtained his M.D. degree at the University of Michigan Medical School in 1992, followed by a five-year orthopedic residency at Washington University St. Louis in 1997. He graduated with a fellowship in spinal surgery at the University of Pittsburgh in 1998. He has established a very busy private practice in Boca Raton, Florida since 2000. Dr. Lowen is a certified orthopedic spine surgeon who specializes in minimally invasive spinal surgery. This includes conservative approaches, such as spinal injections including epidural steroid injections, lumbar and cervical facet blocks, sacroiliac joint injections and hip bursa injections. Dr. Lowens surgeries can be performed through a bloodless technique requiring minimal blood loss and through dilation methods. Essentially, he is operating through a small tube with laser light and microscope illumination. This minimally invasive lateral fusion technique avoids the traditional open methods. The patients hospital stay can be a mere one to two days with minimal blood loss whatsoever. The improvement in preoperative pain can be dramatic and immediate in most cases. Dr. Lowen takes pride in making the best diagnosis possible. He will read his patients MRI and CT scans himself before reading or even touching a radiologist report. Dr. Lowen spends time with his patients by first explaining the diagnosis, personally reviewing the MRI and/or CT scans, and finally, educating and explaining the treatment plan. He will personally implement the plan, whether it involves injections or minimally invasive surgery. Spinal fractures previously required prolonged bed rest and bracing. Now, nearly all can be treated in our office with kyphoplasty, says Dr. Lowen of the procedure. Vertebroplasty is an injection technique for which a painful spinal vertebral fracture is immediately stabilized with an injection of bone cement. This is performed in the office setting under local anesthetic. It is typical to witness a patient arrive with a 10 out of 10 pain score and leave the office after the vertebroplasty with a 0 or 1 out of 10 score. This procedure provides immediate and extreme satisfaction for Dr. Lowens patients. Dr. Lowen is an active member of the North American Spine Society, International Spinal Injection Society, and the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgery. He was recently re-certified by the American Board of Orthopedic Surgeons.
