Dr. Nam Tran is a neuro-oncology surgeon at Moffitt Cancer Center and assistant professor of oncology and neurosurgery at the University of South Florida College of Medicine. Dr. Tran completed his fellowship training at Moffitt, following a residency in neurosurgery at Medical College of Virginia. He was chief resident his final year. Prior to that, he was affiliated for several years with the University of California-Irvine, where he received a Ph.D. in neuroscience and served as an assistant project scientist.Dr. Tran's research interests include regulation of the blood brain barrier, tumor and trauma-associated cerebral edema, central nervous system malignancies and spine biomechanics. He has received advanced training in minimally invasive spine techniques and artificial disc replacement surgery. Dr. Tran has a strong commitment to community service. During medical school at the University of Arizona, he coordinated the Bethany House Women's & Children's Center Health Clinic and Primavera Indigent Health Clinic. More recently, he worked with the Guatemala Ministry of Health to establish medical missions to Guatemala City. In 2008, he was asked to speak about spina bifida at the Second International Symposium on Neural Tube Defects at the College of Physicians and Surgeons in Guatemala. Dr. Tran is fluent in Vietnamese and English.
