Dr. Lonstein graduated magna cum laude from Brandeis University with a B.A. in Biology in 1977. He received his medical degree from Baylor College of Medicine, Houston, TX in 1981. He completed an internship in internal medicine at George Washington University, Washington, D.C., internship in general surgery at the University Health Center Hospitals of Pittsburgh, and then completed a residency in orthopedic surgery at The George Washington University Medical Center, Washington, D.C. He was a visiting Fellow at The National Insitutes of Health, Bethesda, MD. He completed a combined Spine Fellowship at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School, Dallas, TX and the Texas Back Institute, Plano, TX. He has practiced in Sarasota since 1988, treating both surgical and nonsurgical spinal disorders, including degenerative, traumatic, metabolic, geriatric, and tumors of the cervical, thoracic, and lumbar spine. He has published and lectured extensively on disorders of the spine, and has had advanced training in laser, microscopic, arthroscopic and reconstructive surgery of the spine. He has performed over 3,000 major spinal surgical procedures.
