Dr. Porter graduated magna cum laude from Duke University in Durham, North Carolina, where he also earned his medical degree with honors. After completing his internship at Duke, he completed residencies at Barnes Hospital at the Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, Missouri, and the Peter Bent Brigham Hospital at Harvard Medical School in Boston Massachusetts, followed by a hematology fellowship at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland. Dr. Porter has had a long and distinguished career at Ochsner, where he has been on staff since 1964. He served as President of the Alton Ochsner Medical Foundation from 1980 until the formation of the Ochsner Clinic Foundation in 2001. Dr. Porter holds Diplomate certifications from the American Board of Internal Medicine and the Subspecialty Boards of Hematology and Medical Oncology. He is on the Board of Directors of the American Medical Center Consortium and the Greater New Orleans Area branch of the American Cancer Society. Among his numerous professional distinctions, he is a Fellow of the International Society of Hematology, a founding member of the International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer, and a Fellow and life member of the American College of Physicians.
