Dr. Joseph Dowling, a board certified ophthalmologist and The Rhode Island Eye Institute’s founder, focuses his practice on primary care ophthalmology. He is a senior staff member at both Rhode Island Hospital and Miriam Hospital, where he previously spent 15 years as Director of Ophthalmology. He also works as an ophthalmology consultant for both Butler Hospital and Women & Infants Hospital.
Dr. Dowling is an Assistant Clinical Professor (Emeritus) at the Warren Alpert School of Medicine at Brown University, a trustee emeritus of Brown University, and the author of numerous original publications. He previously held the position of President of the New England Ophthalmological Society.
After graduating from Brown University, Dr. Dowling received his medical degree from Tufts University School of Medicine. He completed his residency at Rhode Island Hospital and the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary, as well as a post-graduate course in Ophthalmology at Harvard Medical School. Dr. Dowling is a lifelong resident of Rhode Island.
