Dr. Jahraus is currently the Department Chair and Medical Director of the Melrose Institute. Dr. Jahraus has worked with the institute since 1992. He previously worked as medical director of the Remuda Ranch eating disorder treatment program in Phoenix, AZ. Prior to treating patients with eating disorders Dr. Jahraus practiced family medicine for 10 years and then entered an academic career as associate director of the University of Minnesota Family Medicine Residency Program after which he became the predoctoral director at the University of Minnesota Medical School. During his teaching career at the University of Minnesota Medical School, Dr. Jahraus received the Distinguished Teacher of the Year Award. Dr. Jahraus-s interest in eating disorders arose from his experience with a family member who struggled with anorexia. He coauthored a chapter on eating disorders in Psychosomatic Medicine, an American Psychiatric Association Publishing textbook, and has been featured in various media including two national public television documentaries on eating disorders, and interviews in People Magazine, the New York Times and Entertainment Tonight online. He testified on the need for health insurance coverage for eating disorders at a United States Congressional Briefing on eating disorders in December 2003. His primary interests are medical complications of eating disorders, family dynamics of eating disorders, and program development for the treatment of individuals in various phases of the illness.
