Dr. Coker was Board Certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgeons in 1978. He is licensed to practice medicine in the states of Tennessee and Virginia. His specialties include Spine and General Orthopaedics. Active affiliations are maintained at Centennial Medical Center, Saint Thomas Hospital, Centennial Surgery Center, and HealthSouth Nashville Surgery Center.
Dr. Coker grew up in the state of Virginia. His first twelve years of formal education were in the public school system in Arlington, graduating from Washington Lee High School. He then attended Duke University in Durham, North Carolina, where he majored in history, with a minor in chemistry. His Medical Degree was awarded by the University of Virginia Medical School in Charlottesville in 1969. Following this, he did his medical surgical internship at the University of Virginia Hospital.
Dr. Coker spent three years in the United States Navy as Lieutenant Commander, General Medical Office, with the Atlantic Fleet Anti-Submarine WarFare Station Bermuda. He served one year of surgical residency, followed by three years of orthopaedic surgery training at the Vanderbilt University Hospital Department of Surgery in Nashville, Tennessee.
Dr. Coker has been in private practice in Nashville since 1977. He had teaching appointments as a Clinical Assistant with the Department of Orthopaedics at Vanderbilt University. Although he performs hip and knee surgery, his particular field of interest is spinal surgery. As an outgrowth of this, he developed and patented two different retractors for lumbar spine surgery.
Dr. Coker is a member of the Vanderbilt Orthopaedic Society and served as its President from 1993 to 1994. Other professional memberships held include the Nashville Academy of Medicine, the Tennessee Medical Association, the American Medical Association, and the North American Spine Society.
Dr. Coker’s interests outside of the field of medicine include his family, architectural restoration, travel, scuba diving, and photography.
