Dr. Walter Tan, MD, MS, FACC, FSVM specializes in structural heart repair and advanced devices, bringing leadership and innovation to WakeMed's structural heart program. He leads a new practice at WakeMed: WakeMed Physician Practices Cardiovascular. Dr. Tan is a board-certified cardiologist who provides consultations for elderly and high risk patients who have myocardial, valve or vascular problems. Prior to joining WakeMed, Dr. Tan was a tenured associate professor of medicine and clinical associate professor of surgery at the Brody School of Medicine, East Carolina University, where he served as principal interventionist and investigator for complex aortic valve procedures (TAVR or TAVI). He was also director of Stroke Interventions, associate director of the Cardiac Catheterization Labs, and interim director of the interventional Fellowship Program. Prior to his work at East Carolina University, Dr. Tan was faculty and director of vascular medicine at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He earned his medical degree from University of the Philippines College of Medicine in Manila and completed his residency in internal medicine and fellowships in cardiology and interventional cardiology at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation in Ohio. Dr. Tan then completed an advanced fellowship in interventional radiology at the Pittsburgh Vascular Institute, University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, where he became a clinical associate professor of vascular surgery. Dr. Tan is on the editorial board of Catheterization and Cardiovascular Interventions, the official journal of the Society for Cardiovascular Angiography and Interventions (SCAI). His focus and expertise is on minimally invasive techniques, patient safety, and rigorous understanding of failure modes and procedural complications.
