Brief Intro

Dr. Thomas Perkins is a board-certified orthopaedic surgeon and a partner in the Institute for Athletic Medicine, an orthopaedics and sports-medicine practice based in Auburn Hills, Mich. He joined the practice in 2001 as an associate and became partner in 2002. When not in surgery or seeing patients, Dr. Perkins teaches medical students at Michigan State University, where he is an assistant clinical professor in the Department of Osteopathic Surgical Specialties. He also served as director of MSUs orthopaedic surgery residency program at Mt. Clemens Regional Medical Center. His background on campus and in clinic, as well as his own athletic experience led Dr. Perkins to a career in sports medicine. While earning his undergraduate degree at Oakland University in Rochester Hills, Mich., he played on the schools baseball team, and was an Academic All-American. He earned his medical degree at Michigan State University in East Lansing, Mich. then served his residency in orthopaedic surgery at Mt. Clemens Regional Medical Center and completed a fellowship in arthroscopic surgery and sports medicine back at Michigan State. During his fellowship, he was a team doctor for baseballs Lansing Lugnuts and the NHL semi-professional Capital Centre Pride. He also worked with MSU varsity athletics, and remains an MSU athletic medical consultant. Dr. Perkins and his partner, Dr. John Samani, are medical advisors to gloStream Inc., an electronic medical records (EMR) software provider based in Bloomfield Hills, Mich. Both doctors are early adopters of EMR technology, understanding EMRs important role in clinical decision-making and delivering better patient care. As advisors, Drs. Perkins and Samani work closely with gloStreams software research and development team to ensure the companys EMR software meets both patient care and clinical practice standards. Dr. Perkins authored an article on minimally invasive joint replacement, published in the Journal of Arthroplasty in 2001, and co-authored an article on labrum repairs in athletes for the Journal of the American Association of Osteopathic Orthopaedic Surgery in 2005. He belongs to the American Osteopathic Association, the Michigan Osteopathic Association and the American Osteopathic Association of Orthopaedics. Dr. Perkins is affiliated with Beaumont - Troy, Crittenton Hospital, Pontiac Regional Medical Center, UnaSource Surgery Center (Troy), Clarkston Surgery Center, Bald Mountain Surgical Center and Waterford Surgical Center.
