A medical oncologist and hematologist-oncologist at CTCA at Eastern Regional Medical Center (Eastern), Dr. Sramila Aithal provides patient-centered cancer care as part of a multidisciplinary team.
Dr. Aithal is board certified in internal medicine and oncology. She earned a medical degree from Ambedkar Medical College (Bangalore University) in Bangalore, India. Following medical school, she completed two years of post-graduate training in obstetrics and gynecology as a Diplomat of the National Board.
She then completed a residency in internal medicine at Maimonides Medical Center in Brooklyn, New York. In her fourth year, Dr. Aithal served as a Chief Resident, overseeing one of the largest internal medicine residency programs in New York. During this time, she gained leadership qualities, teaching abilities and administrative experience.
After her residency, Dr. Aithal completed a fellowship in hematology/oncology at Maimonides Medical Center. In her third year, she earned the distinction of Chief Fellow.
Due to exposure to a myriad of pathology during her training, Dr. Aithal has extensive clinical experience in the management of solid organ tumors and hematological malignancies.
Since joining Eastern’s Department of Medical Oncology in July 2008, Dr. Aithal says she appreciates the approach to patient care at CTCA—to treat the whole person, not just the disease, as well as the Patient Empowerment Medicine® philosophy.
"I believe in treating individual patients with great insight into their care and a full understanding using the available evidence-based data," says Dr. Aithal. "I feel this approach offers the best hope for patients to manage their cancer with a good quality of life and minimal toxicity," she adds.
Most importantly, Dr. Aithal says she advocates personalized cancer care since "cancers of the same origin behave in different ways, clinically, biologically, socially, molecularly, and genetically—even though they look alike under the microscope—and cannot be treated the same way as ‘cook-book medicine’," she says.
In addition to her work at CTCA, Dr. Aithal says her family is very important to her. She is married and has a 5-year-old daughter. She also is greatly interested in spirituality and ethics.
Dr. Aithal is a member of several professional organizations, including the American Society of Clinical Oncology, the American Society of Hematology, the American Medical Association, and the American College of Physicians.
