Dr. Kanaya grew up in Monterey and attended Monterey High School. She began her career in pediatrics at the same time that she was raising her two children, Emily (who is now finishing her own pediatric residency in New York) and Sam. She shared a part-time position with another pediatrician who was also a young mother, then changed to full-time once her children were older. After moving around for school and her residency and living briefly in Colorado, she returned to her hometown.
