After his Neurology residency, Dr. Kurlan had fellowship training in Movement Disorders and Experimental Therapeutics at the University of Rochester. He served on the faculty there from 1984 to 2009, advancing to Professor and Director of the Movement Disorders Unit and Cognitive and Behavioral Neurology Unit. He has achieved an international reputation for his expertise in the evaluation, care and research of patients with neurological movement, cognitive and behavioral disorders. He has received numerous awards including "Best Doctor" both nationally and locally. He has published more than 200 scientific articles and has received many research grants. He was an original member of the Parkinson Study Group and has led the Tourette Syndrome Study Group. He has special expertise in Parkinson's disease, parkinsonian disorders, tics and Tourette syndrome, essential tremor, restless legs syndrome, stereotypies, Huntington's disease, tardive dyskinesia, myoclonus, dystonia, dementia, and mild cognitive impairment as well as associated problems such as ADHD, obsessive-compulsive disorder, depression and anxiety.
