Robert C. Apuy, D.D.S.
As a child, Dr. Robert Apuy learned a lot about overcoming adversity, instilling in him determination and a strong work ethic. He was born two weeks before the communist regime took over. His family fled with only what they could carry to the Portuguese colony of Macao. He and his four siblings stayed in Macao with his grandmother while his parents worked to start a new life. The family was reunited 10 years later in Costa Rica.
Dr. Apuy began his undergraduate studies at San Joaquin Delta College and transferred to Loma Linda University School of Allied Health where he earned a degree in Medical Technology. He was accepted into Loma Linda University’s School of Dentistry and was part of the three-year accelerated program. Because foreign students could not get financial aid nor loans, he worked whenever he could--nights, holidays, vacations, and weekends as a medical technologist. He married Pearl, a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner, at the end of his freshman year. Together, they were able to pay the bills and graduate debt free.
Besides working hard to pay his bills, Dr. Apuy also worked hard in school and finished his dental requirements early. This enabled him to take and pass his California State Dental Board three months ahead of schedule and teach as a clinical and laboratory instructor his last quarter. He also was able to get advanced training in oral surgery and I.V. sedation. He received his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree in December 1978 and began practicing dentistry on January 2, 1979. He practiced for over 30 years in a leased office in Easton Professional Plaza. In the summer of 2010, Dr. Apuy’s dream came true. He moved into his new state-of-the-art facility just two properties north of Easton Professional Plaza. He practices comprehensive dentistry utilizing digital radiography, same appointment CEREC system crowns, and 3D conebeam technology.
Dr. Apuy completed a mini-residency for TMJ dysfunction at the University of San Diego Medical Center, and he also completed a mini-residency in dental implants. When he began practicing in 1979, he was one of only two dentists using IV conscious sedation. He takes more than the required continuing education classes each year to stay on-the-cutting-edge of advancements in dentistry. He also maintains membership in professional organizations including the American Dental Association, California Dental Association, American Association of Clinical Pathology, American Academy of General Dentistry, American Academy of Implant Dentistry, American Dental Society of Anesthesiology, and the Fresno Madera Dental Society where is often gives case presentations at their study club..
As part of Loma Linda University School of Dentistry’s service learning, Dr. Apuy volunteered as an adjunct professor and took students on overseas mission trips to China, Honduras, and Nicaragua. His knowledge of two Chinese dialects, as well as English and Spanish were most helpful.
Dentistry runs in the family. Christopher and Heidi, Dr. Apuy’s two children, are both practicing dentists. In his leisure time, Dr. Apuy enjoys fishing, cooking, bike riding, and spending time with his family.
