From as early as she can remember, her grandparents emphasized health not just for themselves, but also for their community. Seeing first-hand the impact of a person’s family and social dynamics on their well-being has shaped her career as a physician. “Family medicine is not just about the lab numbers or the diagnosis, it’s about everything else that goes along with it,” says Dr. Patel. “The stressors in our life, our community, and our lifestyle choices all play a significant role in our health and wellbeing.” Her dedication to uncovering the underlying factors that cause disease eventually led her to lifestyle and functional medicine. After earning her dual Doctor of Medicine and Master of Public Health degrees from the University of Michigan, Dr. Patel served as an attending physician in New York City before relocating to Mooresville in 1999. Here, Dr. Patel realized the limitations of conventional practice while discovering the power of an integrative and functional approach to healthy living. “Traditional western medicine is too busy putting band-aids on everything,” explains Dr. Patel. “Doctors don’t have the time to sit down and actually listen and figure out what’s going on with a patient.”By focusing on the underlying lifestyle behaviors, stressors, and environmental exposures that drive disease, Dr. Patel aims to not only identify a problem, but actually treat or reverse the issue. Dr. Patel is proficient in all areas of primary care. Additionally, she has expertise in gut and hormone health and considerable experience treating patients with chronic diseases such as diabetes, pre-diabetes, hypertension, high cholesterol, anxiety, and depression.
