Early History
Payam Abrishami immigrated to United States at age 11 after living in Iran, Turkey, and Israel. After high school in Los Angeles, he attended UCLA, where he graduated Magna Cum Laude with a BS in Marine Biology.
Cornell University Medical College
He then moved to New York City to attend Cornell University Medical College where he graduated in 2000.
Payam became fascinated with the human skin early in medical school while working night shifts with the New York Firefighter%u2019s Skin Bank. Along with a few other Cornell medical students, he procured cadaveric skin grafts (and other organs) in operating rooms throughout greater New York, Connecticut and New Jersey for tissue banks and burn units worldwide.
During a medical school rotation with A. Bernard Ackerman, M.D. at his then new Ackerman Academyof Dermatopathology, Dr. Abrishami learned dermatology in a vivid manner through Bernie%u2019s multi-headed microscope.
Dermatology Residency and Dermatopathology Fellowship
Dr. Abrishami completed his dermatology residency at the University of Minnesota, one of the largest and oldest programs in the country, which emphasizes reconstructive surgery.
He then went on to complete a Fellowship in Dermatopathology under Dr. Clay Cockerell at the University of Texas-Southwestern, in one of the world%u2019s largest laboratory practices dedicated to skin pathology.
Assistant Chief of Dermatopathology at UCLA
Following his training, Dr. Abrishami accepted a position as Assistant Chief of Dermatopathology at UCLA. As a full time UCLA Professor in the Department of Pathology and Dermatology, he performed consultations on difficult cases sent from hospitals nationwide and trained residents and fellows from both departments of Dermatology and Pathology.
West Dermatology and The Center for Dermatology Care
Since 2008, Dr. Abrishami has served as the Chief Dermatopathologist for West Dermatology Medical Group where he interprets about 40,000 skin biopsies annually for about 40 dermatology offices nationwide; a large and diverse case volume offers him vast consulting experience and also the opportunity to teach rotating dermatology residents and to engage in innovative studies.
Dr. Abrishami also spends two full days a week at the Center for Dermatology Care where he practices clinical, surgical and cosmetic dermatology. He believes emphatically that %u201Cbeing a strong clinician is important for being a good pathologist. Each practice augments the other, and practicing both ultimately helps my colleagues and patients.%u201D
Abrishami Dermatopathology
In 2010, at the request of many colleagues, Dr. Abrishami launched a private dermatopathology practice for routine and consultative services. Abrishami Dermatopathology aims to deliver Dr. Abrishami%u2019s knowledge and passion along with a high level of service. Dr. Abrishami personally reviews all material and is available by phone and email to discuss cases. Dr. Abrishami directly handles any additional testing necessary and does not simply recommend that a clinician pursue other tests or opinions on her own.
