Dr. Milton Owens has been practicing medicine since receiving his BA from Stanford University, Palo Alto, California and graduating with honors from McGill University School of Medicine in Montreal, Quebec.
He ended his tenure as the Chief of the Kidney Transplant Service VA Wadsworth Hospital and transitioned to newly emerging field of bariatric medicine. He was fortunate to work with Dr. Edward E. Mason, the founder of the American Society for Bariatric Surgery and inventor of the vertical banded gastroplasty and gastric bypass operations early in his career.
Dr. Owens went into private practice as a General surgeon with Carl Hill, a pioneer in Bariatric Surgery, who developed and patented the Hill Gastric Clipfor weight loss. Working in a cooperative environment with this eminent bariatric trendsetter, Dr. Owens was able to expand his own knowledge base. When it became clear that Dr. Hill wanted to retire, Dr. Owens began managing Dr. Hill's patients, many were post-op bariatric surgery patients. Managing these patients began his career in what was then called a new field of medicine and led him in the pursuit of excellence over the past 20 years.
After witnessing firsthand the wonderful results that patients experienced from weight loss surgery, Dr. Owens decided that he would commit himself fully to the practice of bariatric surgery. Peers consider Dr. Owens a pioneer and innovator in bariatric medicine. He has written a multitude of highly respected articles published in prominent medical journals throughout North America. He has also advanced a number of new techniques for better, safer weight loss surgery procedures.
Dr. Owens has performed over 8000 bariatric surgeries that have helped his patients achieve the goal of losing the weight necessary to live a happy and healthy life. It is Dr. Owens philosophy that patients who are in need of surgery in order to lose weight must weigh all surgery risk factors and do a benefit vs. risk analysis of each individual situation. Presently, Dr. Owens has been working with seniors in order to pass the benefits of bariatric surgery to all age groups.
With the dramatic weight loss possible from the various bariatric surgery techniques, Dr. Owens has seen countless patients rid themselves of a number of obesity related ailments. Some of these ailments include type II diabetes, high blood pressure and cardiac failure.
Dr. Owens is an active member of the American Society for Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS), and served and served as its Chairman of Public Education Committee from 1999-2001. He is also a member of the Surgical Association for Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgery, The Western Surgical Association and The American College of Surgeons.
