Brief Intro

Dr. Michael Gorum was born in Mobile, Alabama in 1960. His family settled in north Alabama a few years later, he attended public school in Arab, Alabama graduating in 1978. He holds a bachelors degree with honors in chemistry and sociology from Birmingham-Southern College, and a Doctorate in Medicine from the University of Alabama School of Medicine. While attending medical school, he was honored with membership in the Tinsley Harrison Medical Society and Alpha Omega Alpha Honor society. Subsequent to his formal education he interned at the University of Alabama Hospital in Birmingham, first in internal medicine, then in general surgery. In January of 1998 he began neurosurgical training, completing this course in 1993, after serving a year as Chief Neurosurgical Resident. To fulfill an educational training obligation, Dr. Gorum was assigned as a staff neurosurgeon at Wilford Hall Medical Center, located on Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas. Aside from gaining a rudimentary knowledge of Spanish during this tour, he served as Assistant Chairman, then Chairman of the Department of Neurosurgery, as well as Chief Neurosurgical consultant to the Air Force Surgeon General. He also served in numerous committee roles, including ethics committee, trauma committee, and graduate education selection committee. During this time Dr Gorum was instrumental in the startup of the Radiosurgery Service at Wilford Hall, and was an integral part of the Skull Base Surgery Team. After several years on Active Duty, Dr Gorum and his family looked to return to the deep south, near home and family. Columbus, Georgia was a good fit, and he established practice here in 1997. During his tenure in Columbus he has remained active in the community, and continued his commitment to quality medical care. His leadership was instrumental in establishing the Clinical Advisory Group at the Medical Center. That organization has overseen the development of numerous quality initiatives at Columbus largest hospital. He has also served as Chief of the Medical Staff, Chairman of the Credentials committee, and on numerous other committees. Among his professional memberships are the AMA, the American Association of Neurological Surgeons, and the Muscogee County Medical Society. Dr Gorum has spoken on numerous topics concerning neurosurgery and quality management in health care. He has also published articles in both areas. He is married to the former Tammy Tirey, whom he met during his training days in Birmingham. Tammy and the doctor have 2 teenage children and 2 dogs. They enjoy the time they can spend with family, and are especially fond of the outdoors. Dr Gorum also plays tennis, although not as well as he would like. He has completed several marathons, enjoys distance running and biking, and every second he can spend with his children.
