Matthew M. Thompson, MD is an orthopedic surgeon specializing in sports medicine and shoulder surgery. He has served as Assistant Team Physician for the New York Mets baseball team, St. Peter’s College basketball team, and numerous high school football teams. He completed Fellowship training in Sports Medicine and Shoulder Surgery at the top-ranked Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City.
At the University of Kansas, he graduated with honors in Chemical Engineering and participated on the Track & Field team. He completed medical school at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, and then finished his orthopedic surgery residency at George Washington University in Washington, DC.
In addition to treating sports injuries in patients of all ages, he has had specialized training in shoulder replacement, hip arthroscopy, and complex injuries of the shoulder, elbow and knee. His research interests and publications include anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries in young athletes, shoulder dislocations, hip biomechanics and athletic injuries, and baseball-specific orthopedic injuries.
