Dr. Choi's orthopedic practice focuses on minimally invasive, arthroscopic surgery of the shoulder, elbow, and knee. His unique background includes extensive training and expertise in the treatment of complex shoulder conditions, ranging from shoulder instability and rotator cuff repair surgery as well as treatment of ligamentous injuries of the knee. Dr. Choi is fellowship trained in Shoulder and Sports Medicine Surgery and has a particular interest in taking care of athletes.
Dr. Choi was born in South Korea and immigrated to the United States at the age of 9. He grew up in Springfield, Missouri and received his undergraduate degree from Washington University in St. Louis. He attended University of Missouri-Columbia School of Medicine. Following medical school, Dr. Choi completed his residency at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, Virginia. After residency, Dr. Choi completed his Sports Medicine and Shoulder Surgery Fellowship at the world-renowned Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) and Harvard Medical School in Boston, Massachusetts. While there, his subspecialty training placed emphasis on complex shoulder surgical techniques of the shoulder, elbow and knee, which allow active patients to continue with their athletic careers and recreational activities.
While in Boston, Dr. Choi was a team physician for the New England Patriots (NFL), Boston RedSox (MLB), Boston Bruins (NHL), and the New England Revolution (MLS). He also served as team physician for multiple semi-professional, university and high school teams in football, hockey and gymnastics.
After returning to St. Louis, Dr. Choi has joined the medical staff for the St. Louis Cardinals serving as a team physician.
Dr. Choi is well known for his surgical skill and his devotion to teaching and academic research in orthopedic surgery. In addition to authoring numerous textbook chapters and journal articles, he is a recipient of a scientific research grant to investigate the biologics of bone-healing. Dr. Choi has also previously been identified as an Emerging Leader by the American Orthopedic Association (AOA) and was one of 15 individuals selected nationally for participation in the Clinician-Scientist Development Program sponsored by the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons (AAOS), Orthopedic Research and Education Foundation (OREF), and Orthopedic Research Society (ORS).
