Brief Intro

Dr. John Samani is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon and a partner in the Institute for Athletic Medicine, an orthopedics and sports-medicine practice based in Auburn Hills, Mich. He founded the practice in 2000. Dr. Samani graduated from the University of Nebraska and received his medical degree from the University of Iowa College of Medicine. He completed his residency in orthopaedic surgery at the University of Vermont followed by a fellowship at the Minneapolis Sports Medicine Center. There he performed specialty training in sports medicine and arthroscopic and reconstructive knee and shoulder surgery. While in Minneapolis, Dr. Samani enjoyed the privilege of working with professional athletes in the Minnesota Twins, Vikings and Timberwolves organizations. He also worked with many athletes at university and high school levels. Dr. Samani still provides medical care for the Twins when they play in the Detroit area. He currently serves as team physician for the Oakland County Cruisers Frontier League professional baseball team. In 1996, Dr. Samani co-founded the Michigan Sports Medicine Center in Rochester, Michigan. Four years later, he established the Michigan Knee & Shoulder Institute. Dr. Samani has extensive experience in providing continuing education to young orthopaedic surgeons in Southeast Michigan. He participates as a clinical instructor for Beaumont Hospitals and Mt. Clemens Regional Medical Center. He often hosts lectures and clinics for other medical professionals. He serves as a director of the Michigan Knee and Shoulder Fellowship program, which supports the training of orthopaedic surgeons through an additional year of specialized practice in sports medicine and arthroscopic knee and shoulder surgery. Dr. Samani also serves as an associate clinical professor for the Beaumont Hospitals residency program. Dr. Samani has authored a series of articles in publications including The Journal of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery, The Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery and The Journal of Hand Surgery. He also wrote the chapter on acromioclavicular joint injuries in sports that appeared in the book The Upper Extremity in Sports Medicine. Dr. Samani serves as a medical advisor to gloStream, Inc., an electronic medical records software provider based in Bloomfield Hills, Mich. As an early adopter of technology in private practice, Samani understood how an EMR could simplify the process and practice of medicine. It was his encouragement that led one of gloStreams founders to begin developing gloEMR, the companys flagship product. Dr. Samani is a member of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, American Orthopedic Society for Sports Medicine, Arthroscopy Association of North America, and Michigan Orthopedic Society as well as the Michigan Medical Society and Michigan Athletic Trainers Society. Dr. Samani is affiliated with Beaumont Hospitals (Royal Oak and Troy), Crittenton and St. Joseph Mercy Oakland hospitals, UnaSource Surgery Center (Troy) and Waterford Surgery Center.
