Brief Intro

Dr. McBeath is a founding member of South Coast Retina Center having joined Dr. Stanley Carson in the Long Beach, CA practice in 1978. He completed medical training at George Washington University in Washington , DC as a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society. He then became a flight surgeon in the US Air Force including a tour based in Taiwan but involved extensive time in Viet Nam and Thailand during the war. He returned to complete his ophthalmology residency and subsequent retina fellowship at the number one rated Bascom Palmer Eye Institute of the University of Miami, Florida. There he had one of a kind retina training under Edward Norton, MD, Donald Gass, MD and the “father of vitrectomy” Robert Machemer, MD. He added the then new dimension of vitrectomy surgery to the practice and continued to grow with its development over the years. The practice grew to multiple locations and multiple new associates providing excellent retina care to our patients and for our referring doctors. He states it has been a privilege to “live through” the entire history of vitrectomy and the many advances in the field of retina care to the present time when so much can be offered in clinical care of patients to preserve vision. Dr. McBeath actively taught clinical and surgical retina to residents of the University of California, Irvine Ophthalmology program and Veterans Administration Hospital in Long Beach. He was selected “best instructor” by the residents numerous years. Dr. McBeath maintains his interest and main focus on clinical practice and personal care of patients concentrating on diabetes, retinal detachment, macular degeneration and vein occlusion. He participates in current clinical research studies conducted by the practice. He is a Board Certified member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and Los Angeles County Medical Association. He is a member of MemorialCare Physician Society which drives clinical outcomes and performance for MemorialCare Health System. Dr. McBeath is a family man and is enjoying seeing three daughters marry and his twins have twins as a reason to stay young at heart.
