Dr. Janice Elizabeth Nevin, MD

As senior vice president and executive director of Christiana Care, Wilmington, Janice Nevin, M.D., MPH, is responsible for all of the clinical and operating activities at that site. The Wilmington campus of Christiana Care Health System is home to a 230-bed, acute-care hospital, the Center for Advanced Joint Replacement, the Roxana Cannon Arsht Surgicenter, Behavioral Health Services and the Wilmington Hospital Health Center. In addition, Dr. Nevin is the physician leader for a major facilities redesign project at Wilmington. The $205 million project will create a new emergency department, a 13-room operating suite, 120 new patient beds including a new intensive-care unit and a medical office building. Dr. Nevin also serves as associate chief medical officer for the system and is a member of the system-wide acute-care transformation team. An associate professor at Jefferson Medical College, Dr. Nevin served as the residency director of the Jefferson Family Medicine Residency Program from 1995 to 2002. From 2002 to 2008, she was the chair of the Department of Family and Community Medicine at Christiana Care Health System. During this time, Dr. Nevin was also the medical director of the Christiana Care Visiting Nurse Association and clinical chair of Women First, the Community Center of Excellence in Women's Health. As chair, Dr. Nevin incorporated adolescent medicine into the department, consolidated physician practices and resources to improve effectiveness and incorporated community-based contracts providing a clinical home to nine school-based wellness centers. She also integrated statewide health care programs for the juvenile justice system and adolescent pregnancy prevention into the department, developed and received funding for a new faculty-development program targeted at training physicians to work with the underserved populations in the 21st century, and expanded and restructured the health services research section. She was instrumental in developing a sports-medicine program and obtaining external funding to begin a teen clinic at Wilmington Hospital in 2006. Dr. Nevin received her medicine doctorate with honors from Jefferson Medical College in 1987. She completed her family-medicine residency at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in 1990 and received her master's degree in public health in community health services from the University Of Pittsburgh Graduate School Of Public Health in 1992. Dr. Nevin also finished a two-year faculty-development fellowship in family medicine at St. Margaret Hospital in Pittsburgh. Dr. Nevin is a former president of the Association of Family Practice Residency Directors and was a member of the Project Leadership Committee for the Future of Family Medicine Project. She currently serves as chair of the Family Medicine Review Committee for the ACGME and is a member of the ACGME Duty Hours Task Force. Dr. Nevin has numerous publications and national presentations to her credit. Most importantly, Dr. Nevin is married to Charles Pohl, M.D., senior associate dean for student affairs and professor of pediatrics at Jefferson Medical College, and is the mother of two girls: Emma, a junior at Wilmington Friends School, and Annie, a third former at St. Andrew's School.
