Dr. Smith attributes her childhood experiences—growing up on a rural farm in South Korea and living in many different towns as a military family—that sparked her interest in medicine. In particular, the health and healthcare disparities in different communities motivated her to become engaged in this field. Cardiovascular medicine is an ever-changing field. Dr. Smith enjoys coming to work each day ready to bridge the gap between evidence-based medicine and clinical care, so that the patients can have a better quality of life. Dr. Smith credits her physician mentors as the biggest influence in her life. Shadowing a female general surgeon was an empowering program, which she had the opportunity to participate in as a high schooler. More importantly, this formal mentorship challenged her to strive for excellence and to pursue inquisitively with her lifelong learning. Dr. Smith enjoys mentoring female students and medical interns/residents! In her free time, Dr. Smith loves to travel with her family, friends and dogs.It takes a lot of courage for someone to come see a doctor. That's why I believe in building a strong patient-physician relationship with mutual trust, empathy and effective communication. Making the time to really listen to the concerns of the patient is not only my priority but also a key to meaningful care.
