Dr Helen Mawhinney graduated MB, BCh, BAO with honors from the Queen’s University of Belfast School of Medicine in the United Kingdom in 1967. She completed her internship and residency in General Internal Medicine at the Queen’s University of Belfast School of Medicine and was awarded the Membership of the Royal Colleges of Physicians (UK) in 1971. She has been a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of London since 1980. Dr Mawhinney completed a Fellowship in Immunology at the Queen’s University School of Medicine in 1973 as a Royal Victoria Hospital Clinical Research Fellow. On the basis of original research and the submission of a doctoral thesis on "Immunological Aspects of Coeliac Disease" she was awarded an MD degree (equivalent of a US PhD) in 1973. She subsequently completed a second Fellowship in Immunology at the University of Edinburgh, funded by the Cancer Research Foundation (UK) in 1975. Dr Mawhinney first came to the US in 1979 as a Medical Research Council (UK) Fellow. She initially participated in laboratory research related to the immune responses to honey bee venom and honey bee venom immunotherapy. Following her marriage and decision to remain in the United States, she became involved in clinical research on compliance with prescribed medication in asthmatic subjects. Having spent a number of years in private medical practice, Dr Mawhinney returned to UCLA in 2004. Since then she has been primarily engaged in clinical care and in the teaching of first and second-year medical students. Dr. Mawhinney offers many years of experience of clinical care in the field of allergy, asthma and clinical immunology. She is happy to see any patients with concerns relating to any of these issues.
