Brief Intro

My Path to Kaiser Permanente I grew up in New Hampshire. For college, I went in search of warmer weather and found it in Houston, Texas, at Rice University. From Rice, I took with me a strong foundation in the sciences and a love of country music. When I went to medical school back in New Hampshire, I enjoyed the opportunity to spend a little more time with my family, and fell in love with surgery. I pursued this love first in Denver studying general surgery, and then in upstate New York doing a fellowship in vascular surgery. It is great to again be in a warmer climate, and I enjoy all the benefits of living in the Bay Area. Being part of Kaiser Permanente allows me to practice medicine and take care of patients without being distracted by insurance carriers, competing practices, or the business side of medicine. I feel that I am surrounded here by physicians, nurses, and staff who are truly focused on doing what is best for the patients. Why I Am a Vascular Surgeon I spent two years completing a fellowship in vascular surgery. Many different things draw me to this specialty: the highly complex nature of vascular disease, the precise technical demands of the surgeries, and the chance to help patients who have very difficult problems. Vascular surgery has evolved immensely over the past decade. With advances in technology, the treatment options for patients have become much more varied. The best part of being a vascular surgeon today is that we are trained in how to treat vascular problems with medications, open surgeries, and stents – tubes placed within arteries. A large part of my training is in endovascular procedures (using needles, catheters, and wires to open arteries without having to make large incisions). Because we have all these options, we can choose the treatment best suited to each patient. My Practice I perform open surgeries including aneurysm repair, leg bypass (for decreased circulation), dialysis access, and carotid artery surgery (to prevent strokes). I also perform endovascular procedures including aortic stent grafts (placing a large stent through small incisions in the groin to treat abdominal aortic aneurysms), carotid stents, and peripheral stents, to treat blockages in arteries without surgery. I also treat vascular problems using medications and risk factor modification. Being trained in all these varied treatment options allows me to choose and carry out the specific treatment best suited to each patient.
