Dr. Frank Alan Barber, MD

Dr. F. Alan Barber is a board-certified and fellowship-trained orthopedic surgeon who specializes in arthroscopic surgery of the knee and shoulder. This includes knee problems such as cartilage damage and ligament (ACL) injuries; and shoulder problems including rotator cuff, biceps tendon, and dislocations. He has performed over 13,000 knee and shoulder procedures. A native of Oklahoma, Dr. Barber excelled in sports and academics in high school. He was a member of the state championship swim team, was selected to attend Boys State and spent his senior year in Madrid, Spain. After high school, he was awarded a four-year Army ROTC scholarship and attended Oklahoma State University, where he graduated with honors. After being commissioned in the U.S. Army, Dr. Barber received his medical degree from Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas, then completed his orthopedic surgery training at Tripler Army Medical Center in Honolulu, Hawaii. Dr. Barber continued to serve as an officer in the U.S. Army for several years in various locations throughout the U.S. and Europe. He was Chief of Orthopedic Surgery at military hospitals in both Germany and at Ft. Knox, Kentucky. At the William Beaumont Army Medical Center, he was Chief of the Foot Surgery Service and a full-time faculty of the Orthopedic Surgery residency program. He left the Army with the rank of Lt. Colonel after having received the U.S. Army Surgeon General’s Physician Recognition Award. After leaving the service for civilian life, Dr. Barber pursued advanced specialty training as a fellow in arthroscopic and reconstructive surgery at the Medical Arts Hospital in Dallas, Texas. Dr. Barber has received numerous awards including the Berg-Sloat Traveling Fellowship Award from the Orthopedic Research and Education Foundation, and an Arthroscopy Association of North America research grant. He has published numerous articles on knee, shoulder, and sports medicine injuries, written numerous book chapters, is the shoulder section editor of 4th edition of Operative Arthroscopy and the editor of the book Surgical Techniques for the Shoulder and Elbow. He serves on the editorial advisory boards of several professional journals and is the former associate editor for the Arthroscopic Journal which named the Journal Reviewer of the Year. Dr. Barber is also a frequent lecturer to physician colleagues around the world. He is an Instructional Course Lecturer for the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons and a Master Instructor at the Orthopedic Learning Center for the Arthroscopy Association of North America. He regularly instructs the San Diego Shoulder Arthroscopy course. Dr. Barber is currently an Assistant Clinical Professor of Orthopedic Surgery at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, Dallas. He has also served as the sports medicine team physician for local area high schools. He has been honored by D magazine as one of the “Best Doctors in Dallas” and by Texas Monthly magazine as a “Texas Super Doctor.” Dr. Barber has research and/ or consultation contracts with several different medical device companies. These include, but are not limited to, Wright Medical Technology, Depuy Mitek, ConMed Linvatec, Arthrex, and Smith and Nephew. Dr. Barber and his wife, Sherry, have three children.
