Dr. McConnell is a Board Certified Cardio-Thoracic Surgeon and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He received his medical education and surgical training at Stanford University and at UCLA. During his residency at UCLA he was awarded a 2 year research fellowship in Cardiovascular Physiology.
After his residency, Dr. McConnell then served with the US Army as a surgeon with the 101st Airborne Division for 2 years and attained the rank of Lt. Colonel.
In 1981, Dr. McConnell joined the staff at Long Beach Memorial. During his surgical career he has served as Department Chairman, Vice-Chief of Staff and as Chief of Staff. In 1996 he was selected by Los Angeles Magazine as one of the 100 best physicians in LA.
His surgical interests span the full field of CV and Thoracic surgery including coronary bypass, valve surgery, lung cancer surgery and minimally invasive thoracoscopic chest surgery.
He has published 28 scientific articles and 2 chapters in medical textbooks during his career.
