During a class project in junior high school, here in Hampton Roads, Dr. David Goss followed an orthopaedic doctor for a day, discovering a career path that would someday serve his family and his community in ways no one could have foreseen. After completing studies at the University of Virginia, he pursued this career path via an orthopaedic residency at Dartmouth Medical Center. A fellowship in Spinal Disorders in South Australia followed, as did Army Reserve time.
Dr. Goss then returned to Hampton Roads to join the team at SMOC. Within 6 months, however, his professional interest in the spine took on an entirely new significance. A close family member suffered a catastrophic cervical spine injury, leaving him quadriplegic. To say this incident was a great personal and professional challenge is a significant understatement.
This very personal experience helps drive his commitment to train in new techniques that treat disorders of the entire spine. He continues to further his expertise, on a regular basis, to stay abreast of the wealth of cutting edge technologies that abound in the world of spinal surgery.
His professional interests include all aspects of spinal disorders and injuries. Degenerative and traumatic disorders of the cervical, thoracic, and lumbar spine, scoliosis, infection, and spinal deformity are all included. During his fellowship, he indulged several research interests, including prevention and treatment of discitis, and evaluation of anterior interbody fusion devices. He participated in international research trials evaluating the effectiveness of both intradiscal electrothermal therapy (IDET), and total disc replacement in the management of lower back pain.
Dr. Goss has been extensively trained in new techniques to treat disorders of the entire spine, including IDET, facet rhizolysis, interbody fusions, and total disc replacement surgery. Dr. Goss also provides in-office Epidurals and Vertebroplasty.
