Dr. Townsend, a 1969 UTMB graduate, holds the Robertson-Poth Distinguished Chair in General Surgery and The John Woods Harris Distinguished Chair in Surgery. Dr. Townsend is the President of the American Surgical Association, the oldest and most prestigious surgical association in the nation. He is also editor of Sabiston Textbook of Surgery, the oldest, continuously published surgery text in North America. Dr. Townsend has also been named a Texas Monthly "Super Doctor" for several years running.
