Dr. Carmody is a board-certified, fellowship-trained orthopedic spine surgeon with extensive experience in the diagnosis and treatment of a wide range of conditions affecting the spine from disc surgery to scoliosis. Trained at the University of California, Irvine, he is Chief of Surgery as well as section Chief of Orthopedics at Baylor Regional Medical Center, Plano and as such, he is actively involved with improving patient care and outcomes.
A native of Fresno California, Dr. Carmody worked his way independently through college while maintaining a high GPA. After he graduated from the University of California at Irvine, he was awarded the Regent’s Scholarship at UC-Irvine Medical School and graduated in the top five percent of his class and selected into the AOA Honor Society. After medical school, he completed a full year of fellowship training in spinal reconstructive surgery before starting clinical practice in 1996. Dr. Carmody likes to say, “I wasn’t born in Texas, but I got here as quick as I couldâ€.
Dr. Carmody is actively involved in clinical research and is a member of the Complex Spine Study Group, the Scoliosis Research Society, and the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons. He is a primary investigator for the FDA study evaluating the safety and efficacy of the Kineflex/C artificial cervical disc replacement. In addition, he volunteers his time and expertise in Nicaragua twice a year treating traumatic injuries and deformities of the spine as part of the Scoliosis Research Societies Global Outreach Program in conjunction with Health Volunteers Overseas. He also provides instruction and hand-on training to Nicaraguan orthopedic and neurosurgical physicians.
Dr. Carmody is a thoughtful, caring physician who takes time with his patients to explain in plain terms their diagnosis and treatment options and is well-versed on minimally invasive techniques and motion preservation technologies. He frequently recommends effective non-operative treatment plans and recommends surgery only when the potential benefits well outweigh the risks. He frequently sees complex spine referrals from around the region and is well-respected for his diagnostic and surgical skills. Being worthy of his patients’ trust is of paramount importance to him.
