Dr. Anthony Carter, a native of Peabody, Massachusetts, attended Boston University graduating Summa Cum Laude with distinction. He was recognized as a Commonwealth Scholar and became an inductee of Phi Beta Kappa. He gained early acceptance into Boston University School of Medicine, graduating with honors and as a member of Alpha Omega Alpha. Dr. Carter completed his internship and residency at NYU/Bellevue Medical Center. Upon completion of his internship/residency, he spent three years at Langley Air Force Base as a staff orthopaedic surgeon which included a tour of duty overseas as part of Operation Restore Hope in Somalia. Dr. Carter joined Hampton Roads Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine in 1995. He is a board certified orthopaedic surgeon and a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. Dr. Carter is the Chief of Orthopaedic Surgery at Mary Immaculate Hospital and has been the Dean of the Health Academy. His special interests lie in sports medicine and minimally invasive tissue sparing total joint replacements. Dr. Carter instructs nationally and internationally on total hip replacements using the muscle sparing anterior approach and he is currently pioneering the technique for hip resurfacing using the same muscle sparing anterior approach. He was the first orthopaedic surgeon to perform the "Jiffy Hip" in Virginia. He has been featured in MD News and Outpatient Surgery Magazine for his work in these areas. Hampton Roads Magazine recognized Dr. Carter as a top 10 "Top Doc" in orthopaedic surgeon.
