Dr. Southall graduated from King?s College Hospital Medical School, University of London, England. He was trained in general surgery and joined the department of emergency medicine at St. John Hospital & Medical Center (SJH&MC) in 1975, becoming vice-chief in 1980 and chief from 1986 to 2008. He has served on many committees and boards of both the hospital and outside organizations, including as President of the Michigan Chapter of the American College of Emergency Physicians, EMS organizations and hospital and organized medicine committees. He holds the position of Clinical Associate Professor in emergency medicine at Wayne State University School of Medicine. Dr. Southall has received multiple awards including the Ronald L. Krome, M.D. Meritorius Service Award of the Michigan College of Emergency Physicians in 1996, Physician of the Year Award of Saint John Hospital and Medical Center Guild in 2005 and the Wayne County Medical Society Professional Achievement Award in 2008. He has been president of Emergency Medicine Specialists, P.C. since 1996. He served as president of the medical staff at Saint John North Shores Hospital from 1999 to 2004 and chief of staff since that time. He has been a member of the Board of Trustees at Saint John Hospital & Medical Center, Detroit since 2004.
