Brief Intro

Anna Broder, M.D., M.S., is the Rheumatology Division Director and Vice Chair for Research in the Department of Medicine at HUMC. She has extensive expertise in autoimmune diseases, particularly systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). She is deeply committed to enhancing patient outcomes and improving the quality of life for individuals  with systemic rheumatologic autoimmune diseases.

While Dr. Broder treats all rheumatologic conditions, she has specific areas of expertise as outlined below:

  • Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE): Skilled in diagnosing and managing lupus, including complex cases of lupus nephritis, to improve patient outcomes and quality of life.
  • Lupus Nephritis: Expertise in advanced treatment approaches to preserve kidney function and improve patient outcomes in lupus-related kidney disease.
  • Pediatric Transition of Care: Recognizing the unique challenges young adults face in transitioning from pediatric to adult care, she provides specialized support to ensure a smooth and effective transition.  She works closely with patients and their families to ease the transition and address their specific needs.
  • Antiphospholipid Syndrome (APS): Experienced in managing APS to prevent complications like blood clots and improve pregnancy outcomes in affected individuals.
  • Pregnancy and Autoimmune Disease: Offers expert care for autoimmune patients during pregnancy, prioritizing the health of both mother and baby. She works closely with MFM and other specialists to help manage the complexities of autoimmune disease in pregnancy.
  • Hematologic Complications: Manages blood-related complications associated with rheumatologic autoimmune diseases, including anemia and thrombocytopenia.

Research and Leadership: Dr. Broder’s research focuses on SLE, particularly the effects of cardiovascular and kidney disease and antiphospholipid antibodies on patients. She has extensive experience with large observational cohorts, databases, and clinical trials, and her work has been published in journals like Arthritis and Rheumatology, Arthritis Care and Research, and Seminars in Arthritis and Rheumatism. Nationally recognized, she has also served on the American College of Rheumatology panel to develop lupus treatment guidelines.

At Hackensack Meridian, she established an academic rheumatology division, growing it from the ground up to provide top-notch rheumatology care in northern New Jersey. Dr. Broder and her division works across specialties to deliver state-of-the-art, personalized care for patients with complex rheumatologic autoimmune conditions.
