I am a general and bariatric surgeon with 30 years of experience, and I have been practicing at the St. Agnes Hospital since 2002. The nature of life gave me an opportunity to study art and science of surgery in both Old and New Worlds. Born in Moscow, Russia, I graduated from one of the oldest medical schools %u2013 N. Pirogov State Medical School in 1979. My surgical career started at the Hertzen Cancer Research Institute where I advanced from intern to Senior Research Fellow and Associate Professor of Surgical Oncology with special interest in gastric surgery. In 1992 I came to the USA and became a Clinical Research Fellow at the Washington Cancer Institute at the Washington Hospital Center. From 1997 to 2002 I was fully trained as a general and bariatric surgeon at the St. Agnes Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland and went on to practice bariatric, general and laparoscopic surgery in 2002.
With years passed and thousands of patients treated, our Bariatric service is recognized as a %u201CCenter of Excellence%u201D by ASMBS/ACS Bariatric Credentialing Network. Since 2002 we have performed over 2,500 laparoscopic bariatric procedures without mortality and with low morbidity. We offer Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, vertical sleeve gastrectomy (aka as Gastric Sleeve or Sleeve surgery) and laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding or lap band surgery (LAP-BAND and REALIZE Band) as well as revisional bariatric procedures.
Besides Bariatric surgery, our practice includes general, advanced laparoscopic surgery and surgical oncology. One of our specialties is minimally invasive surgical treatment of gastro-esophageal reflux disease and hiatal or paraesophageal hernia. We offer transoral incisionless fundoplication with EsophyX device for selected patients. State-of-the art treatment for GERD/Hiatal Hernia is a Laparoscopic Fundoplication with Hiatal Hernia repair. Unlike frequently performed Nissen fundoplication associated with some side-effects, the Partial or Toupet Fundoplication that we offer, is associated with excellent relief of symptoms and minimal side-effects like dysphagia (difficulty swallowing), gas-bloat syndrome and inability to burp. This variant of fundoplication for treatment of medication resistant reflux is recommended by SAGES.
I am frequently asked by my patients, "Do you like what you do?" The short answer is, "Definitely yes! Surgery is the passion of my life." Every craftsman - and surgery is a craft as much as it is science - loves his or her creation. Meeting a challenge, something others cannot or do not want to do, brings a special sense of achievement. Bariatric surgery gives a unique opportunity to make patients%u2019 life better for years to come. Sometimes a patient%u2019s life is completely turned around and they become able to achieve something that was unthinkable before bariatric surgery and there is nothing more rewarding to a surgeon to know that his work was a part of it.
