Current Responsibilities
Dr. Diokno currently serves as the executive vice president and chief medical officer for William Beaumont Hospitals: Beaumont Grosse Pointe, Royal Oak and Troy. In this role, he is responsible for providing medical administrative and clinical directions for all hospitals and the alternate sites of care (ambulatory clinics, nursing homes and home health care services), and supervises performance improvement, patient safety, medical informatics, medical education and research throughout the system. Dr. Diokno continues to do limited teaching, research and practice of urologic surgery.
Prior Experience
Upon completion of his Urology Residency and Fellowship at the University of Michigan (UM), he was appointed Instructor and soon promoted to professor in Urology/Surgery at UM. He moved to William Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak, Michigan on July 1, 1984 to assume the position of Chairman of the Department of Urology, a position he held until June 30, 2007. He was named the first Peter & Florine Ministrelli distinguished Chair in Urology from June 2006 to June 30, 2007. He has served as a consultant, reviewer and site visitor for the NIH. He was appointed co-chair for the first US guidelines for Urinary Incontinence sponsored by the US Public Health Service under the then AHCPR agency. He has served as consultant and scientific adviser for several Pharmaceutical and Device companies. He has held elected positions including President of the Reed M. Nesbit Society (UM urology alumni association), the Philippine American Urologic Society, Michigan Urologic Society and the North Central Section of the American Urologic Association (AUA). He is currently the president elect of the Geriatric Urologic Society.
Education, Awards and Professional Affiliations
Dr. Diokno received his medical degree from the University of Santo Tomas (UST) in the Philippines, and his urology residency and fellowship at UM. He served on the faculty at UM, during which time he received the Silver Cystoscope Award and the Kaiser Permanente Distinguished Teaching Award. Dr. Diokno has published over 200 peer reviewed articles and book chapters and is the recipient of many scientific awards including the NIH MERIT Award, NAFC Urologist of the Year Award in 2000, the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Society of Urodynamics and Female Urology in 2002, the AUA Presidential Citation Award in 2007 and the Outstanding Alumni Award in Health-Medical for 2007 by the UST Alumni Association. He is the recipient of multiple research funds both from NIH, commercial grants and philanthropy. He is currently funded for research from all these three sources.
