I grew up in Iowa, and attended Iowa State University, running cross country and the mile in both indoor and outdoor track. I was captain of the cross country team, which placed in the top twenty teams in the NCAA. I then attended the University of Iowa Medical School., after which I completed my medical residency and cardiology fellowship at Georgetown University, in Washington DC. I was invited to join the Georgetown faculty, and directed the cardiac catheterization laboratory. While there, I performed the first coronary angioplasty in Washington DC. After several years, I left to start my own cardiology practice in Northern Virginia, and established a large group practice. I opened and directed the first catheterization laboratory at Alexandria Hospital, and was elected Chief of Cardiology by my peers. After twenty years in private practice, I came to the University of Virginia to resume teaching. I am the director of cardiology outpatient services in the Heart and Vascular Center. The Consumers Research Council of America has recognized me as a "Top Cardiologist" the past three years. I was the first recipient of the Brown Award at UVA, given in recognition of the quality assurance system I developed and implemented in the cardiology clinics, which increased treatment to goal of hypertension and hyperlipidemia by nearly 50%. In my spare time, I am an avid fly fisherman, garden with my wife, Ginny, and enjoy singing at our church. Ginny is a nurse practitioner, and we have one son.
